Competition

In an effort to attract older gamers and boost holiday sales of Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo will launch a Metroid Prime GameCube bundle promotion in North America in time for the Thanksgiving week retail period. Unlike the pre-assembled Super Mario Sunshine bundle however, Nintendo will allow customers to purchase the GameCube console and Metroid Prime separately. Though it remains unclear whether the discount will be offered directly by retailers or through a mail-in rebate, GameCubicle has learned that customers can expect to buy both the game and console for just $179.95. Potential customers will have to act fast as Nintendo will likely pull the bundle offer by years end.

This news, however, does not come as a total surprise. Following Microsoft's recently announced Limited Edition Xbox Bundle featuring two Sega games, many industry watchers suspected Nintendo would break out the big guns in the form of a holiday Metroid Prime promotion. Indeed, an MSNBC.com article following Microsoft's announcement mentioned that Nintendo, "may also offer a rebate to gamers who buy both a GameCube, priced at $149.95, and the company’s $49.95 Metroid Prime." The recent listing of a 'GameCube Metroid Platinum Pack' on Amazon.com may be the first in a number of retailer Metroid Prime bundles to come.

Nintendo has placed its bets on Metroid Prime as GameCube's single strongest system-seller this holiday season. The first person adventure developed by Retro Studios may the key to mature gamers 18 and above that currently represent 55% of the gaming market. Indeed, Nintendo has put its marketing resources behind Metroid Prime, filming a 60-second live-action, CGI, and gameplay sequence commercial for extensive air time on television and the silver screen. Nintendo of America has also begun sending out point-of-purchase materials for the game to retailers in large quantities and has further publicized the games coming launch through all public relations outlets.
