On
February 9th, select retailers began offering
GameCube buyers the option of Mario Party 4, Metroid Prime, Resident Evil
Ø, or Star Fox Adventures as a free game with their console
purchase. To coincide with the start of the promotion, Nintendo of America
launched a wide-scale advertising campaign to guarantee public awareness.
The campaign is set to include print, television, electronic media, and
point of purchase advertisements.
The first advertisement to be seen was a humorous television commercial
set at the checkout counter of a video game store. It aired during prime
time on cable stations and the major networks. The spot begins with a
clerk looking into the lens of a handheld barcode scanner. A customer
comes up to the counter with a Platinum GameCube and a copy of Metroid
Prime. The clerk scans the GameCube and $149.95 shows up on the register.
The clerk then scans Metroid Prime but $.00 appears on the register.
Looking perplexed, he scans the game over and over but $.00 continues to
come up.
At the end of the commercial, an announcer explains, "For a limited
time, buy the Nintendo GameCube for only $149.95 and receive Metroid Prime
or one of three other great games free." Nintendo has also turned to
electronic media to get this message to hardcore gamers. Nintendo is
delivering billboard size ads to major gaming web sites, targeting the
sites of competing platforms where it can (see IGN Xbox).
Nintendo's retail promotion and aggressive marketing efforts are shaping
up to have a significant GameCube hardware sales.
