With
under a month left until the launch of Super Mario Sunshine, Nintendo
began airing television commercials for the game last night. The commercial
begins with Mario cleaning up garbage in a park. It then cuts to a scene
of kids skipping over a hill singing, "Clean is better than dirty and
dirty is meaner than clean. Lets all lend a helping hand, Mario can't do
it alone. He'll spray his water to fly around and clean the sludge that's
on the ground." Mario then launches into the air with his water
backpack and footage from the actual game is shown.
The commercial seems to defy all logic and any semblance of a respectable marketing campaign. In fact, it's so bad that it makes us
wonder if this is actually just an unfortunate attempt at humor intended to mock
older Mario commercials. Nintendo tried a similar slapstick routine in the their commercial
for Super Smash Bros featuring Mario, Donkey Kong, Pikachu, and Yoshi
dancing to "So Happy Together" on a grassy hill just before breaking into a fight. If
there's any indication that the Super Mario Sunshine commercial was
intended to be a joke, pay close attention to the old man driving a
scooter on the right side of the screen. We'll let you decide for
yourself.
