Nintendo
GameCube sales soared last week to 67,000 as the holiday shopping
season in Japan kicked into full gear. Unquestionably a significant
influence in GameCube's sales, The Legend of Zelda: Kaze no Takuto
had a tremendous launch on the 13th with gamers lining up outside of
Japanese game stores to claim their copies. The game sold more than
400,000 copies in its first three days of release. Meanwhile, Mario
Party 4 continues to defy all expectations, holding onto the #7 spot
on the software sales chart after five weeks of release. Party sold
48,000 copies in the week with total sales now reaching 414,000.

On the handheld front, Game Boy Advance sales neared a quarter
million units this week. Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire,
continue to lead the way for Game Boy, selling 180,000 copies each
in the week for combined sales of more than 2 million units.

Xbox sales came in strong at 13,400 with Japanese retailers selling
the system for Ľ19,800 ($160) and Microsoft offering a free DVD
remote with a console purchase during the holiday shopping period.
Sony recently cut the suggested retail price of PlayStation 2 to
Ľ23,800 ($192) in Japan and the move continued to pay off this week
with the console selling 115,000 units. It's important to note that
while GameCube sales were quite impressive, PlayStation 2 still outsold GameCube by
1.7:1 on a relative basis. This, in the week of Zelda's release.
