Heading into the all important holiday season, Nintendo took an
early lead this week with extremely impressive hardware sales
numbers in Japan. The story of the week was by far Game Boy Advance,
which on the
release of Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire, saw sales soar to 150,000, up from
43,000 last week. The combined sales of both
Pokémon games was nearly 1,100,000 units.
In consoles, the introduction of
Resident Evil Ř on GameCube lifted system sales to 37,400 units from week-ago
levels of 15,000, putting GameCube on par with PlayStation 2 in
weekly sales. In its first week of release in Japan, REŘ sold
95,000 copies, giving it the #3 spot in the region's software sales
charts. Mario Party 4 also held firm at #5, moving 31,000 - for a
total of 292,000 copies sold since launch.
